John Merrick was his name.
Just Once

The Elephant Man finally relented.
He wondered what it would be like
if only once
he could sleep laying down
like other people.

So that one night
painstakingly
he lowered his enormous head down to his knees
to rest there, blissfully,
atop a pillow.

By morning John Merrick had suffocated under the weight of it.
In some lives
there are no words for happiness.
There are only ones for sorrow.
