It’s Goodbyes Mostly, These Days.

A friend
I would have given my life for
Without hesitation
Now rushes me off the phone.
Makes excuses
we both would have scoffed at once.

I listen for the sound in her voice,
Unmistakeable, imperceptible,
but to me,
that will tell me she remembers us:
our connection so fierce, so true
few ever know.

Instead
I hear her distance,
an unspoken remove,
imperceptible,
but to me.
